Blog post discussing the differences and similarities between different types of Dachshunds dogs.

The Sausage Spectrum: Do Dachshund Coats Shape Who They Are?

All dachshunds share the same bold beginnings. Originally bred in Germany as hunting dogs, these little legends are known for being intelligent, stubborn, loyal, curious—and surprisingly brave for their size.

Over time, the three coat varieties have developed slightly different vibes that many owners swear by today.

Smooth-Haired Dachshunds
The classic sausage dog. Smooths are often confident, independent, expressive, and full of energy, with a strong prey drive to match. They’ve got huge personalities packed into tiny bodies—and yes, they’re usually the most dramatic of the bunch.

Long-Haired Dachshunds
Longs tend to bring a softer, calmer energy. They’re affectionate, gentle, and often a bit more easygoing around strangers. Many owners find they’re more relaxed at home too. This temperament is often linked to spaniel influence from early breeding.

Wirehaired Dachshunds
The comedians of the trio. Wires are playful, outgoing, adventurous—and just a little extra cheeky. Their terrier roots shine through in their spirited, energetic nature and their knack for keeping things interesting.

Of course, coat type isn’t everything. Training, socialisation, and genetics play a huge role in shaping any dog’s personality. But ask any dachshund owner, and they’ll tell you—each coat carries its own kind of magic.

No matter the type, dachshunds continue to build their loyal fanbase (or should we say cult?) thanks to their protective instincts, clever minds, and unforgettable personalities.
